Horse riding on the Reserve is by permit only. Permits can be applied for by filling in the application form below.

How to apply for a Recreational Horse Riding Permit

Read the Conditions below, which outline the requirements for horse riding on the Reserve. Please note that you cannot ride on the Reserve until you have been issued with a Permit Tag.

The purpose of the permit system is to:

  • Prevent injury to other people on the Reserve
  • Avoid disturbance and damage to fragile habitats, archaeology and wildlife
  • Avoid conflicts with reserve management
  • Control path erosion

Insurance & Declaration

Conditions

  • The permit is for one named rider only and is not transferable.
  • The permit is valid from 1st January to 31st December 2026, and is subject to payment of a fee.
  • All permit holders must hold public liability insurance of not less than £2,000,000 which indemnifies them and Merthyr Mawr Estate against any claims that might arise as a result of them exercising rights under this permit.
  • The tag provided with the permit must be clearly attached to the bridle and be clearly visible when on the Reserve, and presented on request to any person who asks to see it. Anyone not displaying their tag will be asked to leave the Reserve.
  • Permit holders are to advise Merthyr Mawr Estate immediately of tags that have been lost by contacting the Estate Office.
  • Riding is only permitted on the marked routes as shown on the route plan.
  • Horses must be kept under control at all times and riders should give way to pedestrians.
  • The construction of horse jumps and the jumping of natural features on horseback is not permitted on the Reserve.
  • All horse droppings within Candleston Car Park must be cleared away by the rider.
  • All gates must be shut carefully.
  • The Estate reserves the right to revoke a permit where the rider is in breach of these conditions.
  • Purchase of a permit shall be an acknowledgement that the permit holder undertakes to accept and observe these conditions, together with the Indemnity below.
